Which regulation applies?
No DGCA rule — airline policy. International flights must match passport exactly per IATA. Domestic flights need ID match per Aircraft Rules 1937.

Step-by-step: what to do now
- 1 Compare your ticket name letter-by-letter against your government-issued ID (Aadhaar / passport / driving licence / voter ID for domestic; passport only for international).
- 2 If the error is ≤3 characters and clearly a typo (e.g., "Sing" instead of "Singh", "Rejesh" instead of "Rajesh"), contact the airline immediately. The earlier you raise it, the cheaper the correction.
- 3 For HappyFares bookings, raise the name-correction request through HappyFares customer care — we coordinate with the airline and can sometimes negotiate fee waivers for clear typos.
- 4 For international flights, the name MUST match the passport exactly. Even minor differences can cause check-in rejection at the destination airport. Don't risk it — correct before departure.
- 5 If the error is major (different person's name, swapped first/last name), correction is generally NOT allowed. You must cancel under the standard fare rules and book a new ticket. Smart Saver (CFAR) helps recover most of the cancelled fare in this case.
- 6 After correction, ALWAYS request a new e-ticket from the airline with the updated name. Verify before travel.
Compensation / refund table
| Scenario | Amount / outcome | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IndiGo — typo correction up to 3 characters | ₹2,500 per name | Allowed up to 4 hours before departure |
| Air India — minor typo (≤3 characters) | Free correction | Air India Express same rule; major changes not allowed |
| SpiceJet — typo correction | ₹1,000-₹2,000 per name | Up to 24 hours before departure |
| Akasa Air — typo correction (≤3 characters) | Free correction | Up to departure; major changes require new booking |
| International carriers — minor typo | Free to ~₹3,000 | Must match passport exactly; carrier-specific rules |
| Major name change (different person) | Not allowed — cancel + rebook | Smart Saver / travel insurance reduces loss |
Time limit: Raise correction request as early as possible. Most airlines have a cut-off 4-24 hours before departure.
HappyFares SmartSaver can help
If your name error is too major to fix (different person), HappyFares Smart Saver (Cancel for Any Reason) recovers 60-80% of the fare regardless of the original fare's cancellation policy.

How many characters can I change on an IndiGo ticket name?
IndiGo allows up to 3 character changes per booking for ₹2,500 per passenger, raised up to 4 hours before departure. Beyond 3 characters or a different person's name is not allowed.
Can I change the name on my ticket to another person?
No. Indian airlines do not allow ticket transfers between passengers. The ticket is non-transferable. If a different person needs to travel, the original passenger cancels (recovering whatever the fare rules allow) and the new passenger books separately.
What if my passport name differs from my booking on an international flight?
Correct it before travel — international check-in WILL reject mismatched names. Most international carriers allow free or low-fee correction up to 24 hours before departure for minor typos. After that, the only option is cancellation + rebooking.
Are middle names required on Indian domestic tickets?
No, but inconsistencies cause friction. If your Aadhaar shows "Rajesh Kumar Singh" and your ticket shows "Rajesh Singh", most counter staff will allow boarding (middle name considered optional). Best practice: match exactly.
Does HappyFares charge a fee for name corrections?
HappyFares passes through the airline's name-change fee at cost — no HappyFares mark-up. For typo corrections we negotiate fee waivers directly with the airline; success rate is around 60%.
