What is DigiYatra?
DigiYatra is a Government of India biometric-based seamless airport experience using facial recognition. Once you enroll, you can walk through dedicated DigiYatra lanes at participating airports without showing physical ID or boarding pass at three checkpoints (entry, security, boarding gate). The system reads your face, matches against the registered DigiYatra ID, and grants access automatically.
Launched in 2022, DigiYatra is operated by the DigiYatra Foundation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. As of 2026, it's available at 28+ airports across India.
How DigiYatra Works
- One-time enrollment: Download the DigiYatra app (iOS + Android, free), verify via Aadhaar OTP + selfie
- Per-flight setup: Add your boarding pass to the DigiYatra app within 48 hours of departure (scan PDF/QR or take a screenshot)
- At the airport: Walk to dedicated DigiYatra entry gate, face is scanned, gate opens
- Security: Same face scan at the DigiYatra security lane (skips the ID check; you still go through CISF physical baggage scan)
- Boarding: Face scan at the DigiYatra boarding gate (skips boarding-pass check)
How to Enroll in DigiYatra
- Download the DigiYatra app (search "DigiYatra" on App Store or Play Store; official publisher is "DigiYatra Foundation")
- Tap "Get Started" → enter your phone number
- Receive OTP → verify
- Aadhaar verification: Enter Aadhaar number → receive OTP from UIDAI → verify
- Selfie: Take a clear face photo (system uses this as the registered biometric template)
- Profile is now created with a unique DigiYatra ID
- To add boarding pass: scan the PDF from your airline, or scan the QR code at airport check-in

| Tier-1 cities | Pune (PNQ), Ahmedabad (AMD), Lucknow (LKO), Guwahati (GAU), Jaipur (JAI), Patna (PAT), Indore (IDR), Nagpur (NAG) |
| Recent rollout (Tier-2) | Bhubaneswar (BBI), Visakhapatnam (VTZ), Trivandrum (TRV), Calicut (CCJ), Chandigarh (IXC), Coimbatore (CJB), Madurai (IXM), Varanasi (VNS), Srinagar (SXR), Ranchi (IXR), Bagdogra (IXB), Vadodara (BDQ), Amritsar (ATQ) |

Benefits of Using DigiYatra
- Faster airport entry: 10-15 seconds at each checkpoint vs 2-5 minutes in regular queues
- No need to carry physical ID: Aadhaar info is securely stored on your phone
- No need to print boarding pass: Digital scan via face recognition
- Less paper handling: Reduces queue time + COVID-era physical contact concerns
- Family enrollment: Each family member needs separate enrollment (no family-grouped DigiYatra ID yet)
Important Limitations + Caveats
- Voluntary only: You can still use traditional ID + boarding-pass lanes at all airports — DigiYatra is an option, not mandatory
- Domestic flights only (for now): International flights still require physical ID + passport + visa verification at immigration
- Children under 5: Cannot enroll separately; must travel with an enrolled adult who carries the child's documents
- Glasses + masks: Modern facial recognition can usually handle glasses; remove face masks before face scan
- Phone battery: Your phone must be alive to show your DigiYatra status if asked — carry a power bank
DigiYatra Privacy + Data Concerns
Common questions about data privacy:
- Where is biometric data stored? On your phone (encrypted local storage), NOT in a central government database. Each airport's facial-recognition system temporarily matches against your phone's stored template.
- Can the government track my travel? Travel records are stored locally — airport gates receive only the "this face matches a valid DigiYatra ID with a valid boarding pass for this flight" confirmation, not the full identity. (DGCA + airline records of your travel exist independently of DigiYatra.)
- Can I delete my data? Yes — DigiYatra app settings → Delete Account fully removes biometric + ID data from the system.
- Aadhaar leakage: Your Aadhaar info is shared with UIDAI for one-time verification, then never re-transmitted.
Common DigiYatra Issues + Fixes
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
| Face scan fails at entry gate | Try again with phone screen on (sometimes flash matters); remove glasses; check Wi-Fi/data signal |
| Boarding pass not detected | Re-scan boarding pass PDF from your airline; ensure PNR matches |
| "Account suspended" error | Aadhaar may need re-verification; tap Update Aadhaar in app settings |
| App crashes on opening | Update to latest version from App Store/Play Store |
| Boarding pass not appearing | Wait 5-10 minutes after web check-in; refresh app |
Should You Use DigiYatra?
Use DigiYatra if:
- You fly frequently (5+ flights per year) — the time savings add up significantly
- You travel through metros where queues are 10+ minutes
- You're comfortable with Aadhaar-linked services
- You typically carry a smartphone with charged battery to the airport
Stick with traditional lanes if:
- You rarely fly (1-2 trips/year — enrollment effort > savings)
- You have strong privacy concerns about facial-recognition systems
- You travel with elderly family members who can't manage app-based check-in
- You usually rely on physical boarding passes for record-keeping
