Air India's 24-Hour Free Cancellation Rule

India's civil aviation regulator DGCA mandates free cancellation for all scheduled domestic and international flights. Air India complies fully: if you cancel at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, and your booking was made at least 7 days before the flight, you get a full refund of the base fare and fuel charges. Only the airport development fee (ADF), user development fee (UDF), and OTA transaction fees are non-refundable in this window.

This rule applies to all fare types — including promotional "non-refundable" fares. Air India's standard terms cannot override DGCA CAR Section 3. This is one of the strongest passenger-protection rules in the world for airlines.

⚠️ Important: The "7 days before departure" condition is key. If you booked 5 days before departure, the 24-hour free window does NOT apply — Air India's standard fare-class fees kick in immediately after booking.

Air India Cancellation Fees by Fare Type (2026)

Air India uses a multi-tier fare family system. Fees differ significantly between fare types, so always check which fare class is on your ticket before cancelling.

DGCA mandates that refunds must be processed within 7 working days of cancellation. Air India generally meets this in 5–7 days for direct bookings. If your refund hasn't appeared after 15 days, you can escalate via Air India's official refund escalation form or file a complaint with the DGCA's Air Sewa portal.

Air India Rescheduling vs. Cancellation

Rescheduling (changing the flight date/time without cancelling) is often cheaper than cancelling and rebooking, especially when fare prices have risen. Air India's date-change fees for Economy Saver are ₹2,500–₹3,500 domestic — significantly lower than the cancellation fee. If you need to change travel dates, always try "Manage Booking → Change Date" before cancelling.

Fare difference: If the new flight is more expensive, you pay the fare difference. If cheaper, Air India retains the difference on most fare types (Flex and above may refund it as travel credit).

Special Circumstances: Refund Without Fees

Air India and DGCA regulations provide full refunds without cancellation fees in the following situations:

  • Flight cancellation by Air India: Full refund or free rebooking on the next available flight.
  • Significant schedule change (2h+ delay): Passenger may choose refund over acceptance of new schedule.
  • Denied boarding due to overbooking: Full refund + DGCA-mandated compensation (₹5,000–₹10,000 depending on route distance).
  • Medical emergency (passenger or immediate family): Submit medical certificate; Air India may waive fees at discretion.
  • Death of immediate family member: Full refund with death certificate; fees waived.
  • Visa denial: Air India does not automatically waive fees for visa denial, but it may be considered case-by-case with documentation from the embassy.

Booked Through OTA? Here's What Changes

If you booked your Air India ticket through HappyFares or another OTA (MakeMyTrip, Yatra, Cleartrip, Ixigo), the same cancellation rules and airline fees apply — the OTA cannot charge more than the airline's published fees. However:

  • The refund goes to the OTA first, then to your payment method — add up to 48 hours.
  • Some OTAs charge a convenience fee of ₹150–₹300 for processing the cancellation request — this is separate from the airline fee.
  • HappyFares charges ₹0 cancellation processing fee through our Easy Refund portal.
  • You can also cancel directly on airindia.com if you have your PNR, even if booked via an OTA — the refund will go to the original payment method.
