Flight Cancellation Charges in India + How to Get a Refund

What airlines actually deduct, what you always get back, and the exact steps to claim your refund.

Last updated: June 2026 · based on DGCA rules and airline fare conditions
Short answer: Domestic economy cancellation charges in India are usually around ₹3,000–₹3,500 per passenger, but they are capped at your basic fare + fuel surcharge — so on a cheap ticket you pay less, never more than the fare. Taxes and statutory fees are always refunded, even on non-refundable tickets. And under the DGCA rule effective 26 March 2026 you can cancel free within 48 hours of booking if departure is at least 7 days away (15 days for international).

Your refund rights (DGCA)

48-hour free cancellation. Cancel within 48 hours of booking with a full refund, as long as departure is 7+ days away (domestic) or 15+ days away (international). Effective 26 March 2026.
The penalty is capped. An airline can never charge a cancellation penalty greater than your basic fare + fuel surcharge. On a low fare, you simply lose less.
Taxes always come back. Government taxes, User Development Fee, Passenger Service Fee and most statutory charges are refunded even on "non-refundable" fares — the airline may not keep them when you don't fly.
Airline-initiated cancellation = full refund. If the airline cancels or significantly delays your flight, you get a full refund with no cancellation fee (or a free alternate flight).

Cancellation charges by airline

The exact penalty depends on your airline and fare type — and is always capped at basic fare + fuel surcharge. The cheapest "Saver / Value / Promo" fares carry the biggest penalty; flexible fares carry a smaller one. Tap an airline for its current, verified figures:

AirlineHow its cancellation fees work
IndiGoSaver fares carry the highest penalty; Flexi Plus / UpFront are much lower, and UpFront can be free 72 hr+ before departure.
Air IndiaVaries by fare family — Value (lowest fare) has the highest penalty; Comfort/Flex are lower, and the top Flex fares can be free to change.
Air India ExpressValue vs Flex fares; the Express "Easy Refund" add-on softens cancellation on selected fares.
SpiceJetPromo fares carry the highest penalty; Flexible / SpiceMax fares are lower.
Akasa AirSaver vs Flexi fares; Flexi reduces the change/cancel penalty.

How to cancel a flight and get your refund

  1. Open your booking at happyfares.in/History (or the site/airline you booked with) and select the trip.
  2. Check the refund breakdown — the cancellation penalty vs the refundable amount (taxes + statutory fees are refundable).
  3. Confirm the cancellation. Within 48 hours of booking and 7+ days before departure (domestic), it's free.
  4. Get your refund to the original payment method — usually 5–7 business days for cards, 7–14 days for other methods.

Cancel vs reschedule

If your plans are only shifting, a date change is often cheaper than cancelling — you keep the fare and pay just a change fee plus any fare difference. Compare the reschedule fee against the cancellation penalty before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What are flight cancellation charges in India and how do I get a refund?
For domestic economy flights in India, airline cancellation charges are typically around ₹3,000–₹3,500 per passenger, but they are capped at your basic fare plus fuel surcharge — so on a cheap ticket you pay less, never more than the fare itself. The taxes and most statutory fees are always refunded. To get the refund, cancel the ticket (through the website you booked on or the airline), and the refundable amount is returned to your original payment method, usually in 5–7 business days for cards and 7–14 days for other methods.
Can I cancel a flight for free in India?
Yes, in two cases. First, under the DGCA rule effective 26 March 2026 you can cancel free of charge within 48 hours of booking, provided the departure is at least 7 days away for domestic flights (15 days for international). Second, if the airline cancels your flight or delays it significantly, you are entitled to a full refund with no cancellation fee. Some premium fare families (e.g. IndiGo UpFront/Stretch+, Air India Flex) are also free or low-cost to change well before departure.
Do I get my taxes and fees back when I cancel a flight?
Yes. Government taxes, the User Development Fee, Passenger Service Fee and most statutory charges are refunded even on non-refundable fares — airlines may not keep them when you do not fly. The airline can only retain the cancellation penalty (capped at your basic fare + fuel surcharge) and, on some international tickets, a small refund-processing fee. Always check the refund breakdown.
How much do airlines deduct for cancellation in India?
The deduction is the cancellation penalty for your fare type, but it can never exceed your basic fare plus fuel surcharge. Lowest "Saver/Value/Promo" fares carry the biggest penalty; flexible fares (Flexi Plus, Comfort/Flex, SpiceMax, Akasa Flexi) carry a smaller one. See each airline's exact current figures on our per-airline pages linked below.
How long does a flight refund take in India?
Once the cancellation is processed, refunds reach your original payment method in roughly 5–7 business days for credit/debit cards and net banking, and 7–14 days for some wallets or bank transfers. International tickets can take a little longer. If you booked on HappyFares, our Rapid Refund Sure add-on returns the money instantly even when the airline takes 5–7 days.
Is cancellation cheaper than rescheduling a flight?
Often, rescheduling (a date change) is cheaper than cancelling, because you keep the fare and pay only a change fee plus any fare difference — and on flexible fares the change fee is small or waived close to booking. If your plans are merely shifting, compare the reschedule fee against the cancellation penalty before deciding.
What are the cancellation charges on a non-refundable flight ticket?
On a "non-refundable" fare you lose the base fare portion (up to the basic fare + fuel surcharge cap), but the taxes and statutory fees are still refunded — so you almost always get something back. Cancelling within the 48-hour DGCA window (departure 7+ days away domestic) still gives a full refund even on these fares.
Does HappyFares charge a fee to cancel a flight?
HappyFares charges zero convenience fee with promo code HFNCF on bookings, and you only pay the airline's own cancellation penalty when you cancel — manage or cancel your booking anytime at happyfares.in/History. HappyFares Easy Refund add-ons (24-Hour RefundGuard, Rapid Refund Sure, Smart Saver "Cancel for Any Reason") can further protect or speed up your refund.
