On Air India domestic economy, whether seat selection is free depends on your Smart Fare. Value charges for choosing a seat, while Classic includes a free standard seat and Flex includes a free seat with preferred rows and flexibility. If you select nothing, Air India still assigns you a seat free of cost at web check-in. Forward rows, preferred seats and extra-legroom seats are paid extras across fares.
Updated June 2026 · HappyFares
Seat selection trips up a lot of Air India flyers because the rules changed when the airline moved to its Smart Fares structure. The same route can show a free seat for one passenger and a charge for another, simply because they booked different fare families. The good news: you are never forced to pay just to sit somewhere on the plane.
This guide explains exactly which Air India fares include free seats, what the paid options are, and the three places you can pick your seat. We will also cover the DGCA rule everyone is asking about and what it actually means in 2026.
Is seat selection free on Air India?
Seat selection on Air India is free on some fares and chargeable on others. Under Air India’s domestic economy Smart Fares, the Value fare treats standard seat selection as a paid extra, while the Classic fare includes a complimentary standard seat and the Flex fare includes a seat with preferred rows plus change flexibility. Across every fare, a seat is assigned to you free if you choose none.
So the honest answer is: it depends on your fare, but nobody pays just to board. The cheapest Value bucket simply unbundles the seat so the headline price stays low. If you want a guaranteed free seat choice, Classic and Flex build it in.
One more point worth knowing: Air India typically opens a set of free rear standard seats at web check-in on a first-come basis. If you booked Value and skipped the paid seat at booking, you can often grab a free rear seat the moment check-in opens. To understand how the buckets differ beyond seats, our Air India fare types guide breaks down baggage, changes and meals too.
The older “Comfort” fare names are outdated
If you have read older articles mentioning Air India “Comfort” fares, ignore that naming. The current domestic economy structure is Value, Classic and Flex. Always check the fare label shown at booking, since that label decides whether your seat is free or paid.
What are the paid seat types on Air India?
Air India sells preferred seating as an opt-in extra, which is permitted under DGCA’s 2024 unbundling circular. The paid categories are forward and preferred rows nearer the front, and exit-row or extra-legroom seats with more space. Exact prices vary by route, demand and seat, so the only reliable figure is the one shown on airindia.com when you select.
We deliberately will not quote a rupee amount here. Seat charges move with the route and how full the flight is, and a number that is right for Delhi to Mumbai today can be wrong next week. Always confirm the live charge on the airline’s seat map before you commit.
Forward and preferred rows
These sit closer to the front of the cabin, so you board and disembark faster. On Value fares they carry a charge; on Classic and Flex you may still pay extra if you specifically want a front or preferred row rather than a standard seat.
Exit-row and extra-legroom seats
Exit-row and bulkhead seats offer noticeably more legroom and are the most in-demand paid seats. Airline rules apply: passengers in exit rows must be able-bodied adults willing to assist in an emergency, so infants and certain passengers cannot be seated there.
How do you select your seat on Air India?
You can choose your Air India seat at four stages, and the seat map looks the same across them. You can pick at the time of booking, later through Manage Booking on airindia.com using your PNR and last name, inside the Air India mobile app under My Trips, or during web check-in once it opens. Web check-in begins 48 hours before departure and closes about an hour before.
For most flyers, the smartest move is to book the fare that suits you, then handle seats at web check-in if you are happy to take a free rear seat. If a specific seat matters, lock it earlier so it does not sell out.
Picking your seat at booking or via Manage Booking
At booking, the seat map appears after you choose passengers and fare. To add or change a seat later, open Manage Booking on airindia.com, enter your 6-character PNR and last name, and select Seats. The same is possible in the Air India app under My Trips. Our Air India Manage Booking guide walks through each screen.
How do free seats work at Air India web check-in?
Air India web check-in is free and is where many flyers get a seat at no cost. When check-in opens 48 hours before departure, Air India typically releases standard rear seats free on a first-come basis. If you select nothing at all, the system still assigns you a seat free of charge so you always have a confirmed spot to board.
This is the key money-saver on a Value fare. Set a reminder for the 48-hour mark, check in early, and pick from the free rear seats before they fill. Our Air India web check-in guide shows the full process and how to download your boarding pass.
Remember that web check-in and airport counter check-in are both free on every Indian airline. There is no fee for getting a boarding pass at the counter, and a digital boarding pass on your phone is accepted for domestic flights, so you do not need to print anything.
What about Air India Premium Economy and Business?
Air India Premium Economy, launched in late 2024, includes complimentary preferred-seat selection as part of the cabin. The seats use Recaro recliners with roughly 38 inches of pitch and feature on widebody A350, B787 and B777 aircraft, with a growing domestic A320neo retrofit. Air India has promoted Premium Economy “from ₹599 above economy” on eligible flights.
If you upgrade to Premium Economy, you are not choosing between free and paid seats in the economy sense. Preferred-seat selection comes built in. First and Business class likewise include seat selection. For a closer look at the cabin, see our Air India Premium Economy review.
What does the DGCA seat rule mean for Air India in 2026?
As of 2026, there is no enforced rule requiring free seat selection on Air India. A 60% free-seat mandate was announced by DGCA on 17 March 2026 but was held in abeyance before it took effect, so it does not currently apply. Airlines may charge for seat selection as an opt-in extra under DGCA’s 2024 unbundling circular, which legitimised paid preferential seating but did not make seats free.
Here is the fuller picture. DGCA’s Air Transport Circular 01 of 2024 requires that charges for preferential seating, meals and similar extras be opt-in rather than pre-ticked. In March 2026, DGCA directed airlines to offer at least 60% of seats free and to seat same-PNR passengers together from 20 April 2026. After airline pushback, the Ministry of Civil Aviation placed that directive “in abeyance till further orders” before it came into force.
So do not assume seats are free by law. They are not, at least not yet. For the latest on this rule, see our explainers on the suspended 60% free-seat rule and DGCA free seat and cancellation rules. You can also verify the circular directly on dgca.gov.in.
If you booked a Value fare and want to avoid seat charges
Skip the paid seat at booking and wait for web check-in. When it opens 48 hours out, log in promptly and pick a free rear standard seat. If none suits you, let Air India assign one free. You will board with a confirmed seat without paying a rupee for selection.
If you are travelling as a family and want to sit together
Book early and select seats together at the time of booking, since adjacent free seats get scarce as a flight fills. Choosing Classic or Flex makes this easier because seat selection is included. If you are on Value, check in the moment the 48-hour window opens to find adjacent free seats. Our guide on getting seats together without paying has more tactics.

Does Air India charge for seat selection?
It depends on your fare. The Value fare charges for selecting a standard seat, while Classic and Flex include a free seat. Across all fares, forward rows, preferred seats and extra-legroom seats are paid. If you pick nothing, Air India assigns a seat free at web check-in, so you never pay merely to board.
How can I get a free seat on Air India?
Book a Classic or Flex fare for an included seat, or wait for web check-in on any fare. When check-in opens 48 hours before departure, Air India releases free rear standard seats first-come. Select one of those, or let the airline assign a seat free of charge. Both web and counter check-in are free.
When does Air India seat selection open?
You can select a seat as soon as you book, and free rear seats typically open at web check-in 48 hours before departure. Web check-in closes about an hour before the flight, so log in early to choose from the free seats before they are taken by other passengers on the same flight.
Is seat selection free in Air India Premium Economy?
Yes. Air India Premium Economy includes complimentary preferred-seat selection as part of the cabin, alongside roughly 38-inch pitch Recaro recliners on A350, B787 and B777 widebodies plus a growing A320neo domestic retrofit. First and Business class also include seat selection. Economy seat rules differ and depend on your Value, Classic or Flex fare.
Will I get a free seat at the airport if I skip web check-in?
Yes. Airport counter check-in is free on every Indian airline, and you will be assigned a seat at no charge. The Ministry of Civil Aviation barred any counter boarding-pass fee, so there is no legitimate “counter charge”. That said, web check-in lets you choose from free seats earlier, which is usually the better option.
Disclaimer: Airline fees, fare rules, and policies change frequently and vary by fare type, route, and timing. The figures and structures described here are indicative — always confirm the exact charge shown at the time of cancellation, change, or seat selection, or on the airline’s official website.
