On SpiceJet, seat selection depends on your fare. SpiceSaver does not include a seat at booking, while SpiceFlex and SpiceMax show all seats free at web check-in (SpiceMax also adds an extra-legroom seat and 15 kg baggage). Free middle and rear seats become selectable once web check-in opens, and a seat is assigned free if you choose none. Front rows, exit rows and SpiceMax legroom are paid extras.

SpiceJet’s seat rules confuse people because the same flight can show a paid seat map at booking and a free one a day later at web check-in. That is by design. The cheapest fare keeps the seat out of the bundle, then opens free seats once check-in starts. Knowing this timing is the whole trick to flying SpiceJet without paying for a seat.
Below we cover which SpiceJet fares include free seats, what the paid seat types are, and the four ways to choose your seat. We will also clear up the airport check-in myth and explain the DGCA seat rule as it stands in 2026.
Is seat selection free on SpiceJet?
Seat selection on SpiceJet is free on some fares and chargeable on others. The SpiceSaver fare does not include a seat at the time of booking, whereas SpiceFlex and SpiceMax display all seats free at web check-in, with SpiceMax also bundling an extra-legroom premium seat and a 15 kg baggage allowance. On any fare, free middle and rear seats open once web check-in starts.
So if you booked the cheapest SpiceSaver fare, you are not stuck paying for a seat. You simply wait for web check-in, when free seats appear. And if you select nothing at all, SpiceJet assigns you a seat free of charge, so you always board with a confirmed spot.
To see how SpiceSaver, SpiceFlex and SpiceMax differ on baggage, changes and meals, our SpiceJet fare types and add-ons guide lays it all out side by side.
What are the paid seat types on SpiceJet?
SpiceJet sells premium seats as an opt-in extra, which DGCA’s 2024 unbundling circular permits. The paid categories are the front rows near the front of the cabin (roughly rows 1 to 5), emergency-exit rows with more legroom, and SpiceMax legroom seats. Exact charges vary by route and demand, so the only reliable figure is the one shown on spicejet.com when you select.
We will not invent a rupee amount, because seat charges shift with the route and how full the flight is. A figure that fits Delhi to Goa today can be wrong tomorrow. Check the live price on SpiceJet’s seat map before you pay.
Front rows
The front rows let you board and exit faster and are sold as preferred seats. They carry a charge even on fares that otherwise show free seats, because the free seats are typically the middle and rear ones.
Emergency-exit rows and SpiceMax legroom
Exit-row seats offer the most legroom and are the priciest preferred seats. Airline safety rules apply, so only able-bodied adults willing to help in an emergency may sit there. SpiceMax seats package extra legroom with added baggage as a premium product, which suits flyers who want more space without buying seats à la carte.
How do you select your seat on SpiceJet?
You can choose your SpiceJet seat at four stages. You can pick at the time of booking, later through Manage My Booking on spicejet.com using your PNR with your last name or email, inside the SpiceJet app under My Bookings, or during web check-in. Web check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before the flight.
For SpiceSaver flyers, the cheapest route to a free seat is to skip seats at booking and pick one when web check-in opens. If a particular seat matters, lock it earlier so someone else does not take it first.
Picking your seat at booking or via Manage My Booking
At booking, the seat map appears after you choose your fare and passengers. To add or change a seat later, open Manage My Booking on spicejet.com, enter your PNR with your last name or email, and select seats. The SpiceJet app offers the same under My Bookings. Our SpiceJet Manage Booking guide walks through every step.
How do free seats work at SpiceJet web check-in?
SpiceJet web check-in is free and is where most flyers get a seat at no cost. When check-in opens 48 hours before departure, free middle and rear seats become selectable on SpiceFlex and SpiceMax, and free seats open broadly. If you select nothing, SpiceJet assigns a seat free of charge so you always have a confirmed place to board.
This is the money-saver on a SpiceSaver fare. Set a reminder for the 48-hour mark, check in early, and grab a free middle or rear seat before they go. Our SpiceJet web check-in guide shows the full flow, including how to download the boarding pass.
One myth to bury for good: there is no SpiceJet counter check-in fee. Web check-in and airport counter check-in are both free on every Indian airline. The Ministry of Civil Aviation barred any counter boarding-pass charge, so the old claim about a SpiceJet counter fee is simply false. For the detail, see our piece on whether web check-in is free in India.
What does the DGCA seat rule mean for SpiceJet in 2026?
As of 2026, there is no enforced rule requiring free seat selection on SpiceJet. A 60% free-seat mandate was announced by DGCA on 17 March 2026 but was held in abeyance before it took effect, so it does not currently apply. Airlines may charge for seat selection as an opt-in extra under DGCA’s 2024 unbundling circular, which legitimised paid preferential seating but did not make seats free.
The background helps. DGCA’s Air Transport Circular 01 of 2024 requires that charges for preferential seating, meals and similar extras be offered on an opt-in basis, not pre-ticked. In March 2026, DGCA directed airlines to offer at least 60% of seats free and to seat same-PNR passengers together from 20 April 2026. After airline pushback, the Ministry of Civil Aviation placed that directive “in abeyance till further orders” before it came into force.
So do not assume SpiceJet seats are free by law. They are not, at least not yet. For more, read our explainers on the suspended 60% free-seat rule and DGCA free seat and cancellation rules. You can verify the circular directly on dgca.gov.in.
If you booked SpiceSaver and want to avoid seat charges
Do not buy a seat at booking. Wait for web check-in 48 hours before departure, log in promptly, and pick a free middle or rear seat. If none appeals, let SpiceJet assign one free. You will board with a confirmed seat without paying for selection.
If you are travelling as a family and want to sit together
Book early and select seats together at booking, since adjacent free seats vanish as the flight fills. SpiceFlex and SpiceMax make this easier because their seats are free at web check-in. On SpiceSaver, check in the instant the 48-hour window opens to find adjacent free seats. Our guide on getting seats together without paying has more ideas.

Does SpiceJet charge for seat selection?
It depends on your fare. SpiceSaver does not include a seat at booking, while SpiceFlex and SpiceMax show all seats free at web check-in. Front rows, exit rows and SpiceMax legroom are paid on any fare. If you choose nothing, SpiceJet assigns a seat free, so you never pay merely to board the flight.
How can I get a free seat on SpiceJet?
Book SpiceFlex or SpiceMax for free seats at web check-in, or wait for web check-in on SpiceSaver. When check-in opens 48 hours before departure, free middle and rear seats open. Select one, or let SpiceJet assign a seat free of charge. Both web and airport counter check-in are completely free.
When does SpiceJet seat selection open?
You can pick a seat as soon as you book, and free seats open at web check-in 48 hours before departure. Web check-in closes 60 minutes before the flight, so log in early to choose from the free middle and rear seats before other passengers on the same flight take them first.
Is there a SpiceJet airport check-in fee?
No. Airport counter check-in is free on SpiceJet, as it is on every Indian airline. The Ministry of Civil Aviation barred any counter boarding-pass fee, so the old “SpiceJet ₹100 counter charge” claim is false. A mobile boarding pass is accepted for domestic flights, so you do not need to print anything.
What is SpiceMax and is it worth it for seats?
SpiceMax is a premium fare bundle that includes an extra-legroom seat and a 15 kg baggage allowance, with all seats free at web check-in. It suits flyers who want more space and baggage without buying each item separately. Whether it is worth the price depends on the route fare difference, which you can compare on HappyFares.
Disclaimer: Airline fees, fare rules, and policies change frequently and vary by fare type, route, and timing. The figures and structures described here are indicative — always confirm the exact charge shown at the time of cancellation, change, or seat selection, or on the airline’s official website.
