Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Monday 14 September 2026. The idols are installed that day in homes and in thousands of public pandals across the city.
Anant Chaturdashi, the final day, falls on Friday 25 September 2026. That is when the largest mandals carry their idols in procession to the sea, with the immersion running through the night and into Saturday 26 September at dawn.
Not every household observes the full span. Many keep the idol for one and a half days, five days, or seven days, with smaller immersions on each of those milestones. That staggering is why the city stays busy throughout rather than only at the two ends.
When should you arrive and leave?
Arrive on or just before the first day if you want to see the installations and the early darshan queues, which are at their shortest in the opening days. Arriving a day ahead, on Sunday 13 September, is generally easier than landing into the first-day rush itself.
Departing is where people get it wrong. Do not book a flight out on the evening of Friday 25 September. Visarjan processions close roads across large parts of central and south Mumbai, and the drive to the airport becomes unpredictable for hours. Either leave before the final weekend, or stay through Saturday 26 September and fly out once the city reopens.
How do you plan Lalbaugcha Raja and the big pandals?
Lalbaugcha Raja in Lalbaug draws the longest queues in the city, and the close-up mukh darshan line can run for many hours, stretching considerably on the final weekend. The navas queue and the general darshan queue move at very different speeds, so check which one you are joining.
The practical advice is unglamorous but it works. Go on a weekday early in the festival rather than the final weekend, start before dawn, carry water, and accept that a long queue is part of the experience. GSB Seva Mandal in King’s Circle, Ganesh Galli, Andhericha Raja and Mumbaicha Raja are the other major draws, and several of them move faster than Lalbaug.
Where does the visarjan happen?
Girgaon Chowpatty is the main immersion point for the largest idols and the one most visitors head to. Juhu, Versova and Powai take substantial numbers as well, and the smaller neighbourhood immersions happen at ponds and artificial tanks across the city.
Crowds at Chowpatty on Anant Chaturdashi night are enormous and movement is slow. If you are going, arrive early rather than at the peak, agree a meeting point with your group, keep valuables minimal, and plan how you are getting back before you set out. Families with small children are usually better served by a smaller local immersion or by watching a procession pass rather than joining the beach crowd.
When should you book flights?
Mumbai is a high-capacity destination, so the festival does not empty the route the way a small-airport festival does. What it does is concentrate demand on the arrival days at the start and the departure days at the end, and it tightens hotel availability across the city for the whole span.
Book both legs together and pick your dates around the two pinch points rather than through them. If your dates are flexible, arriving before the first day and leaving mid-festival avoids both the opening rush and the visarjan lockdown entirely, and you still see the pandals at their best.
