Carrying Wedding Outfits on a Flight: Lehengas, Sherwanis and Heavy Embroidery

Lehengas, sherwanis and heavily embroidered wedding outfits can travel in checked baggage inside a sturdy garment bag or box, or in cabin baggage if weight allows, since IndiGo and Air India both cap a single economy cabin bag at about 7 kg. Keep jewellery and delicate dupattas in your cabin bag, and allow extra time at security, since metallic zari and sequins can trigger additional screening.

Wedding season reopens on Friday, 20 November 2026, with Dev Uthani Ekadashi marking the end of Chaturmas, and flights to wedding destinations fill up fast. Here is how to get a lehenga, sherwani or heavily embroidered outfit from your home to the venue without a crease, a snag or a security delay.

Should your wedding outfit go in cabin or checked baggage?

Both work, and the right call depends on how irreplaceable the outfit is and how much weight you have left. A bridal lehenga with hand embroidery, real zari or delicate stonework is safest in cabin baggage, folded in a padded garment sleeve, because checked baggage is handled by machines and other bags are stacked on top of it. A sherwani, a guest’s saree or a less delicate outfit travels fine as checked baggage if it is packed in a proper garment bag or a rigid box rather than loose in a soft duffel.

If you are travelling with multiple outfits for a multi-day wedding, split them: keep the one outfit you cannot afford to damage or lose in the cabin, and check the rest.

How much weight do you actually have for a lehenga or sherwani?

IndiGo’s single cabin bag allowance is 7 kg (within 55 x 35 x 25 cm), plus one personal item under 3 kg that fits under the seat. Air India’s economy cabin allowance is also around 7 kg, plus a personal item under 3 kg. A heavy bridal lehenga with a stiff net skirt, real zari and a blouse can easily weigh 3 to 5 kg on its own, so if you are also carrying a laptop bag or handbag as your personal item, weigh the outfit at home before you leave.

A garment bag or suit carrier is generally treated as your one cabin bag, not a free extra piece, so its weight counts against the same limit. If it will not fit within your cabin allowance, plan to check it instead, ideally in a rigid box that protects the embroidery from pressure.

How do you pack heavy embroidery without damaging it?

Fold the outfit along its natural seams rather than through embroidered panels, and place acid-free tissue paper or a soft cotton cloth between folds so sequins, beads and zari threads do not catch on each other. Roll a dupatta instead of folding it tightly, since sharp creases in silk or georgette can be hard to steam out. If you are checking the outfit, a rigid box or a padded garment bag with a hard base protects a stiff lehenga skirt far better than a soft suitcase, where it can get squashed under other luggage.

Carry a small travel steamer or a wrinkle-release spray in checked baggage if you want to touch up the outfit at the destination rather than relying on a hotel iron, which can be too hot for delicate embroidery or synthetic linings.

Will security screening flag zari, sequins or metallic thread?

It can. Heavy metallic embroidery, sequins and stonework are dense enough to show up on body scanners and X-ray machines, so it is common for outfits like this to get an extra look or a pat-down at the security check, whether you are wearing the outfit or it is in your cabin bag. This is routine and not a sign of a problem, but it is worth building in a little extra time before your flight during wedding season, when security lines are already longer.

Where should jewellery and small accessories travel?

Jewellery, cash and other valuables should always go in your cabin baggage, never in checked luggage. Both IndiGo and Air India explicitly exclude jewellery, cash and other valuables from their checked baggage liability, so if a checked bag carrying jewellery is lost or damaged, the airline is not obliged to compensate you for it. Keep jewellery in your personal item or a small pouch inside your cabin bag, and keep embroidered potlis, clutch bags and other small accessories with you rather than packing them in the hold.

Common Questions

Can I carry a lehenga in a garment bag as well as my regular cabin bag?

Usually no. A garment bag is generally counted as your one cabin baggage allowance rather than an additional free item, so its weight has to fit within your airline’s cabin limit along with anything else you are carrying on board.

Will my sherwani get crushed if I check it?

It can, if it is packed loose in a soft bag. A proper garment bag folded along the seams, or a rigid box, protects a sherwani far better than tossing it into a regular suitcase with other items on top of it.

Can I check in a wedding outfit box instead of a suitcase?

Generally yes, as long as it meets the airline’s size and weight limits for checked baggage and is reasonably sturdy. Very large or oddly shaped boxes may need to be checked in as special or non-standard baggage, so it helps to check with the airline if your box is unusually bulky.

Is there a separate weight allowance for wedding outfits?

No. Wedding outfits are treated like any other item of baggage and count toward your normal cabin or checked baggage allowance. If your outfit and other luggage together go over the limit, you will need to pay for excess baggage.

Can I just wear my wedding jewellery through the airport instead of packing it?

Yes, many travellers prefer this for heavier jewellery, since wearing it avoids the packing question entirely. Be ready for it to be checked at the security screening point, and keep any jewellery you are not wearing in your cabin bag rather than checked luggage.

What happens if my garment bag is overweight at check-in?

You will be asked to either move weight into another bag if you are within your overall allowance, or pay an excess baggage fee for the extra kilos. Both IndiGo and Air India let you prepay for extra baggage online, which usually costs less than paying at the airport counter.
