Air India Express Seat Selection 2026: Free Seats & Xtra Seat

On Air India Express, seat selection depends on your Xpress fare. Xpress Lite and Xpress Value treat the seat as chargeable, while Xpress Comfort and Xpress Flex include a free standard seat. If you buy no seat, a free seat is assigned to you. The paid preferred-seat product is called Xtra Seat, also available through add-on packs, covering preferred, front and extra-legroom seats.

Updated June 2026 · HappyFares

Air India Express runs a four-tier Xpress fare family, and seats are bundled into the higher tiers but not the lower ones. That is why two passengers on the same flight can see different seat charges. The cheapest Xpress Lite keeps the price down by leaving the seat out, while the richer fares fold it in. Nobody, though, pays just to board.

This guide explains which Xpress fares include free seats, what the Xtra Seat product is, and the five ways to choose your seat. We also cover the DGCA seat rule as it stands in 2026 so you know where you really stand.

Is seat selection free on Air India Express?

Seat selection on Air India Express is free on the higher Xpress fares and chargeable on the lower ones. Xpress Lite and Xpress Value treat seat selection as a paid extra, while Xpress Comfort includes a free standard seat plus a meal voucher and more baggage, and Xpress Flex includes a free seat with flexibility and a partial refund option. If you buy no seat, one is assigned to you free.

So even on the cheapest Xpress Lite fare, you are not forced to pay for a seat. Skip the paid seat and Air India Express assigns you one at no charge, so you always board with a confirmed spot. If a free choice of seat matters to you, Xpress Comfort and Xpress Flex build it in.

To compare all four Xpress fares on baggage, meals and changes, our Air India Express fare bundles guide lays them out side by side.

The four Xpress fares at a glance

Xpress Lite is the lean base fare, with seat and meals chargeable. Xpress Value adds checked baggage but still charges for the seat. Xpress Comfort includes a free standard seat, a meal voucher and more baggage. Xpress Flex includes a free seat plus flexibility and a partial refund. Pick the tier whose bundle matches how you travel.

What are the paid seat types on Air India Express?

Air India Express sells preferred seating as the “Xtra Seat” product, an opt-in extra permitted under DGCA’s 2024 unbundling circular. Xtra Seats cover preferred, front and extra-legroom seats, and they are also available through add-on packs that bundle several extras together. Exact prices vary by route and demand, so the figure shown on the booking flow or the Air India Express app is the only reliable one.

We will not quote a rupee amount, because seat charges shift with the route and how full the flight is. A figure that fits one sector today can be wrong tomorrow. Always check the live charge before you pay for an Xtra Seat.

Xtra Seat: preferred, front and extra-legroom

Xtra Seats let you choose a preferred location, a front row for faster boarding, or an extra-legroom seat for more space. Buying through an add-on pack can bundle the seat with other extras, which sometimes works out tidier than buying each item separately. Airline safety rules apply to exit-row seating, so only able-bodied adults willing to help in an emergency may sit there.

How do you select your seat on Air India Express?

You can choose your Air India Express seat at five stages. You can pick at the time of booking, later through Manage Booking, inside the Air India Express app, by buying an add-on pack, or during web check-in. Web check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes about an hour before the flight, in line with every Indian carrier.

For Xpress Lite or Value flyers, the cheapest path to a free seat is to skip the Xtra Seat and either let a free seat be assigned or pick a free one at web check-in. If a specific seat matters, buy the Xtra Seat earlier so it does not sell out.

Picking your seat at booking, Manage Booking or an add-on pack

At booking, the seat map appears after you select your fare and passengers. To add or change a seat later, open Manage Booking with your PNR and last name, or use the Air India Express app. Add-on packs are another route to a paid seat. Our Air India Express baggage policy guide explains how packs bundle baggage with other extras.

How do free seats work at Air India Express web check-in?

Air India Express web check-in is free and is where many flyers secure a seat at no cost. Web check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes about an hour before the flight. If you have bought no Xtra Seat, a free seat is assigned to you, so you always have a confirmed place to board even on the leanest Xpress Lite fare.

This is the money-saver on the lower Xpress fares. Set a reminder for the 48-hour mark and check in early. Our Air India Express web check-in guide shows the full flow, including how to download your boarding pass.

As with every Indian airline, web check-in and airport counter check-in are both free. There is no charge for getting a boarding pass at the counter, and a digital boarding pass on your phone is accepted for domestic flights, so you do not need to print anything.

What does the DGCA seat rule mean for Air India Express in 2026?

As of 2026, there is no enforced rule requiring free seat selection on Air India Express. A 60% free-seat mandate was announced by DGCA on 17 March 2026 but was held in abeyance before it took effect, so it does not currently apply. Airlines may charge for seat selection as an opt-in extra under DGCA’s 2024 unbundling circular, which legitimised paid preferential seating but did not make seats free.

The background helps here. DGCA’s Air Transport Circular 01 of 2024 requires that charges for preferential seating, meals and similar extras be offered opt-in, not pre-ticked. In March 2026, DGCA directed airlines to offer at least 60% of seats free and to seat same-PNR passengers together from 20 April 2026. After airline pushback, the Ministry of Civil Aviation placed that directive “in abeyance till further orders” before it came into force.

So do not assume Air India Express seats are free by law. They are not, at least not yet. For more, read our explainers on the suspended 60% free-seat rule and DGCA free seat and cancellation rules. You can verify the circular directly on dgca.gov.in.

If you booked Xpress Lite and want to avoid seat charges

Do not buy an Xtra Seat. Either let Air India Express assign a free seat or pick a free one at web check-in when it opens 48 hours before departure. You will board with a confirmed seat without paying for selection. Only buy the Xtra Seat if a specific preferred or extra-legroom seat genuinely matters to you.

If you are travelling as a family and want to sit together

Book early and either pick seats together at booking or buy Xtra Seats together so adjacent spots are guaranteed before the flight fills. Choosing Xpress Comfort or Flex helps, since each includes a free seat. For more tactics, see our guide on getting seats together without paying.

Common questions about Air India Express seat selection

Does Air India Express charge for seat selection?

It depends on your Xpress fare. Xpress Lite and Xpress Value treat the seat as chargeable, while Xpress Comfort and Xpress Flex include a free standard seat. The paid preferred-seat product is Xtra Seat. If you buy no seat, Air India Express assigns one free, so you never pay merely to board the flight.

What is Xtra Seat on Air India Express?

Xtra Seat is Air India Express’s paid preferred-seat product, covering preferred, front and extra-legroom seats. Prices vary by route and demand, so confirm the live charge in the booking flow before you buy.

How can I get a free seat on Air India Express?

Book Xpress Comfort or Xpress Flex for an included seat, or skip the Xtra Seat on lower fares and let a free seat be assigned. You can also pick a free seat at web check-in, which opens 48 hours before departure. Both web and airport counter check-in are completely free.

When does Air India Express seat selection open?

You can choose a seat as soon as you book, and web check-in opens 48 hours before departure, closing about an hour before the flight. If you have bought no Xtra Seat by then, a free seat is assigned to you, so you board with a confirmed spot regardless of your Xpress fare.

Will I get a seat if I buy nothing on Air India Express?

Yes. If you buy no Xtra Seat, Air India Express assigns you a free seat, so you always have a confirmed place to board. Airport counter check-in is also free on every Indian airline, and a mobile boarding pass is accepted for domestic flights, so there is no need to print anything.
