Air India Express Cancellation Policy 2026 — Charges & Refunds

Air India Express cancellation charges depend on which Xpress bundle you booked — xpressLite and xpressValue carry the highest deductions, while xpressBiz is largely refundable with a smaller deduction. The exact fee is shown in Manage Booking before you confirm and varies by fare and how long before departure you cancel. Statutory taxes and airport fees are always refunded, even on non-refundable fares, and DGCA caps any penalty at your basic fare plus fuel surcharge.

Updated June 2026 · HappyFares

Air India Express keeps its cancellation rules tied to the bundle you choose at booking. After AirAsia India merged into it, the airline settled on an “Xpress” family of fares, and the more you pay upfront, the gentler the cancellation terms. This guide explains the structure — which bundles are cheap to cancel and which aren’t — what you always get back, how to cancel step by step, and how the DGCA rules protect your refund in 2026.

How much does it cost to cancel an Air India Express flight?

Air India Express applies a per-passenger cancellation deduction that depends on two things: your Xpress bundle and how close you are to departure. The exact rupee figure is shown in Manage Booking before you confirm, so you always see the number before committing. Because the airline tunes these fees by fare and route, we won’t quote a fixed amount here — instead, here’s how the bundles compare.

Xpress bundle What it is Cancellation treatment
xpressLiteEntry fare, cabin-focusedHighest deduction; most restrictive
xpressValueAdds ~15 kg checked bagHigh deduction
xpressFlexFlexibility bundle (no change fee)More lenient deduction
xpressBizFullest fareLargely refundable, smaller deduction

The principle is simple: the cheaper the bundle, the more you forfeit if you cancel. An xpressLite seat is built to be the lowest price, so its cancellation deduction is the steepest. An xpressBiz fare is built for travellers who need to change plans, so cancelling it costs the least. Timing matters too — cancelling earlier generally costs less than cancelling close to departure.

Bundle names and inclusions can shift over time, so confirm your current bundle at booking and read the fee shown at cancellation. For a full breakdown of what each fare includes, see our Air India Express fare bundles guide.

What do you get back when you cancel?

Statutory taxes and airport fees are always refunded, even on the most restrictive xpressLite fare and even on a no-show. This is a DGCA requirement, not the airline’s choice. Taxes such as GST, the User Development Fee, the Airport Development Fee and the Passenger Service Fee are returned as money — never as a voucher — because you never used the airport or the flight.

What you can forfeit is the airline’s own portion: the base fare and the bundle’s cancellation deduction. So your refund works out as the ticket price, minus the cancellation deduction, plus every statutory tax and airport fee in full. On a deeply discounted xpressLite fare the base portion may be largely consumed, but the tax component still returns to you.

Sitting above all of this is a hard ceiling. DGCA caps any cancellation penalty at your basic fare plus fuel surcharge, so an airline charge can never exceed that amount. If a bundle’s deduction would somehow go higher, the cap governs. That rule is your safeguard against losing more than the regulations permit.

How to cancel an Air India Express booking

You cancel an Air India Express ticket from Manage Booking on the airline’s website, and the refund figure is shown before you confirm. Keep your PNR (the six-character booking reference) and the lead passenger’s last name handy. A standard online cancellation takes only a few minutes and doesn’t need a phone call.

The path is short:

  1. Go to airindiaexpress.com and open Manage Booking.
  2. Enter your PNR and last name to load the trip.
  3. Select cancel, then choose the passengers and sectors you want to drop.
  4. Review the refund summary — it shows the deduction, the taxes returned, and your net refund.
  5. Confirm. You’ll receive an email with the cancellation and refund reference.

If you booked through an online travel agent rather than the airline directly, cancel through that agent or their app, since they hold the ticket and return the money to you. The DGCA cap and the tax refund apply either way. Our Air India Express web check-in guide covers what to do once your travel is confirmed instead.

How long does an Air India Express refund take?

The refund timeline is DGCA-mandated and identical across Indian airlines. A card or original-payment-mode refund must reach you within 7 days; cash refunds are immediate; and bookings made through an agent or portal are processed within 14 working days. No processing fee may be deducted from your refund.

In practice, the airline releases the refund quickly, but your bank or card network adds a few days before it lands on your statement. So a refund can read as “processed” while still taking a little longer to appear in your account. If it overshoots the DGCA window, contact Air India Express with your cancellation reference and quote the timeline rule.

One more point in your favour: the airline may offer to hold your refund as a credit shell for future travel, but you are not obliged to accept it. Under DGCA rules the passenger chooses, so you can insist on the money returning to your original payment method.

The DGCA 48-hour free-cancellation rule

There’s a window where you can cancel an Air India Express ticket for free. Under DGCA’s refund regulation (Section 3, Series M, Part II), effective 26 March 2026, you can cancel or amend a flight within 48 hours of booking with no cancellation charge. This 48-hour window replaced the older 24-hour rule, so don’t rely on outdated “24-hour” advice for cancellations.

There’s a key condition. The free window applies to tickets booked directly on the airline’s website or app, and it does not apply if departure is within 7 days for a domestic flight (or within 15 days for international). Book a flight leaving next week and the free window is off. Book three weeks out and you get a 48-hour safety net to change your mind without penalty.

On a date change inside that window, the change fee is waived, though any fare difference still applies. For the rules across every carrier, see our guide to DGCA flight cancellation rules for Indian airlines.

If you bought a non-refundable xpressLite fare

xpressLite is the cheapest Air India Express bundle and the most restrictive on cancellation. If you cancel outside the DGCA 48-hour window, expect a high deduction that may consume much of the base fare — the exact figure appears in Manage Booking. Your taxes and airport fees still return as money. If your plans are uncertain, an xpressFlex or xpressBiz bundle, or travel insurance, is often cheaper than abandoning an xpressLite seat.

If you need to change rather than cancel

Sometimes a date change beats cancelling outright. xpressFlex carries no change fee (you pay only the fare difference), and xpressBiz changes are reduced, while xpressLite and xpressValue changes cost more. If you’ll still travel, changing usually preserves more value than cancelling and rebooking. Our guide on how to change a flight date in India walks through the trade-off.

Common questions

Can I cancel one passenger from a group Air India Express booking?
Yes. In Manage Booking you choose which passengers and sectors to cancel, so one traveller can drop out while the others fly. The deduction applies per cancelled passenger, and the refund summary shows the net amount before you confirm.

Does Air India Express refund to my card or as a voucher?
You choose. DGCA rules let the passenger insist on a refund to the original payment method. The airline may offer a credit shell for future travel, but you are not required to accept it — ask for the money back if that suits you better.

Why can’t you tell me the exact cancellation fee?
Because Air India Express sets the deduction by bundle, route, and timing, and revises it from time to time. The only reliable figure is the one shown in Manage Booking for your specific ticket. What’s fixed is the structure: cheaper bundles forfeit more, and taxes always return.

What if Air India Express cancels my flight, not me?
That’s different. If the airline cancels or significantly reschedules, you’re entitled to a full refund or an alternative flight with no cancellation penalty. Our guide to your DGCA rights when a flight is cancelled covers it.

Is web check-in free on Air India Express?
Yes. Web check-in and airport counter check-in are both free on every Indian airline, and a digital boarding pass is accepted for domestic flights. Check-in is entirely separate from cancellation charges.
